Current cargo space situation in Germany
The global logistics market in 2020 and 2021 has caused major challenges for the entire industry. Although the economy recovered across all industries in the aftermath of the prolonged lockdowns and border closures, it led to high network loads this year, resulting in an increased shortage of cargo space. In the following, we provide an overview.
The current market situation is significantly influenced by the development of shipment volumes, which have increased by up to 20% in the last two years. In contrary to the years before, the high volume of shipments did not decrease in summer as usual, but is currently on a steady, very high level. Only slight slowdowns are also expected for September. The reasons for this are catch up effects, shifts in consumption to online retailing and changes in inventory levels in industry and retail.
On the other hand, there is a shortage of available capacity in terms of vehicles, drivers and warehouse personnel, and a heavily burdened infrastructure. Furthermore, the high requirements for hygiene and distance regulations in the workplace as well as preventive measures remain in place in order to maintain the functionality of the network of DACHSER. Consequently, this raises personnel and process costs.
Increased volumes with limited cargo space resources are consistently seen throughout the logistics industry. However, the teams of DACHSER are doing their very best to develop intelligent solutions in order to provide international quality, network stability and thus security for our customers' supply chains, even in uncertain times.
