DACHSER Hungary celebrates its 25th anniversary
DACHSER founded its first country organziation in Eastern Europe in Hungary in 1999 – at that time as a joint venture under the name of LIEGL & DACHSER – seeing development potential in the country. The expectations have been confirmed: in the last decades, the number of employees has increased to around 400, the annual net sales amounted to EUR 107 million in 2023 and almost the entire DACHSER service portfolio is available at the 7 locations in Hungary, including road, air and sea transport, food logistics and contract logistics.
1999 was an eventful year: the whole world was worried about whether the year 2000 would cause IT problems and the euro appeared as a unit of account in the states of the Union. The world economy experienced a slow rise. In this economical environment, DACHSER decided to establish its first branch in Eastern Europe and began construction of the logistics center in Pilisvörösvár.
Initially, DACHSER Hungary – then LIEGL & DACHSER – concentrated primarily on imports. Only later did a large number of export-oriented companies appear on the Hungarian market, and DACHSER launched domestic transport services. As Hungary was not yet a member of the European Union at that time, the company had accumulated a wealth of knowledge about customs clearance in the years before accession, which is still a considerable advantage today when shipping outside the EU market, for example to the UK.
The Hungarian country organization has grown rapidly in the 2000s. The logistics center in Pilisvörösvár was opened in 2000, followed by branches in Tiszaújváros, Kecskemét, Pécs and Zalaegerszeg. In addition to road transport, DACHSER Hungary has been providing air and sea transport since 2006 with a centre in Vecses. In the same year the transportation and storage of dangerous goods, which requires compliance with special procedures and regulations, was started in Pilisvörösvár and Tiszaújváros. DACHSER Food Logistics, was launched in Hungary in 2008. Contract logistics completed the service portfolio. In this context, the company offers its customers tailor-made, comprehensive transport and warehousing solutions, as well as consultancy, process analysis, planning and implementation, and value-added services, e.g. packaging, labelling, pricing, merchandising, construction of product display stands.
LIEGL and DACHSER become DACHSER Hungary
The Liegl & DACHSER joint venture was wholly acquired by DACHSER in 2022. Today, DACHSER Hungary has become one of the leading logistics service providers in the country. In 2023, the Hungarian company handled a total of 634,800 shipments, transported 519,000 tonnes of goods with the help of around 400 employees, provided 69,000 square metres of warehouse capacity for its customers and achieved net sales of EUR 107 million.
„In Hungary, we have colleagues who have been with DACHSER for a quarter of a century – this is the highest recognition we can receive after 25 years," says Péter Szabó, country manager of DACHSER Hungary.
