DACHSER and CharterWay invest in road safety
By the end of 2023, DACHSER aims to equip the trucks that transportation companies use in its network with a turn assist system. This plan applies to all new short-distance transport trucks procured via CharterWay in Germany.
The logistics provider will split the costs for the extra road safety with its partner CharterWay.
From 2024 onward, all newly registered trucks and buses in the EU must be equipped with turn assist systems. DACHSER wants to take action earlier on this and is supporting transportation companies in retrofitting their existing short-distance transport fleets. In cooperation with Mercedes-Benz CharterWay, DACHSER will also equip all newly procured short-distance transport trucks used in the DACHSER network with a turn assist system. It has been a standard feature in new long-distance vehicles for several years.
The use of turn assist systems supports truck drivers and reduces the risk of accidents in city traffic.

In doing so, we’re making a significant investment in protecting cyclists and pedestrians and increasing road safety.”
Equipping 450 trucks with turn assist systems by 2024
Following a successful pilot project at the Hamburg logistics center, in which 80 vehicles were retrofitted with the technology in 2020, DACHSER, together with CharterWay, is now equipping all vehicles fresh off the assembly line that DACHSER will use in short-distance transport with the BVS 71000 turn assist system from Dometic. This will bring a further 370 new trucks with the additional safety equipment for pedestrians and cyclists to the road between now and the end of 2023. The total cost of this retrofit will be borne entirely by DACHSER and CharterWay. Martin Kehnen, Head of CharterWay Germany, says: “At Mercedes-Benz Trucks, we place a very high value on safety. The focus here is clearly on improving protection for pedestrians and cyclists.”
