DACHSER implements solution for economical driving
DACHSER is equipping its 200 vehicles in its own fleet in Germany with modern connectivity devices from ZF Friedrichshafen by the end of 2024. They enable drivers to optimize their driving style based on data, i.e. to drive more economically and thus also more environmentally friendly. In addition, DACHSER driver trainers train the company's own drivers and, in the medium term, those of its service partners to drive efficiently.
The devices, known as SCALAR Connectivity Devices, allow conclusions to be drawn about driving style from the vehicle data read out. They work manufacturer-independently for all types of drive, from diesel and electric motors to hydrogen vehicles. Drivers can then access their individual data via an app in a protected area on the SCALAR Orchestration platform and optimize their driving style accordingly in order to save fuel or electricity.
In addition to technological support, the appropriate qualifications of the drivers also play a role. For example, DACHSER's driver trainers train around 450 of its own professional drivers as well as the service partners and their drivers. "Our service partners often don't have the capacity to train their drivers themselves," says Hendrik Jansen from DACHSER Service und Ausbildungs GmbH. "We support them here with our expertise. Following the pilot projects at three of our locations in Germany, awareness of economical and ecological driving has also increased again among our transport partners. Until zero-emission vehicles are fully available, economical driving is a very sensible contribution on the way to completely avoiding emissions."
A more ecological and at the same time more economical driving style
Pilot projects with service partners and their drivers at three DACHSER branches show just how big the levers are: an energy-efficient driving style saves a good four liters of diesel per 100 kilometers and reduces CO2 emissions by an average of around 12 percent. "These figures make it clear that conscious driving plays a significant role in a more ecological and at the same time more economical driving style," says Roland Zitzmann, Project Manager at DACHSER Service und Ausbildungs GmbH. "Although we charge the electric vehicles exclusively with green electricity, the economical use of renewable energies is more than sensible here too."
As part of its climate strategy, DACHSER is focusing on energy and process efficiency as well as research and innovation in order to make supply chains more sustainable. In addition, there is social commitment beyond the boundaries of the company and its core business. A modern fleet of vehicles with the latest generation of diesel engines and the practical use of emission-free vehicles are among the concrete measures, as is an optimized driving style in terms of energy efficiency.
DACHSER is currently training the driver trainers in the branches. These trainers then support the 450 or so drivers employed by DACHER with their expertise on driving style and technical issues. In a pilot project, the driver trainers have already trained 33 drivers from seven service partners. DACHSER intends to extend the driver trainer concept to all German branches.
