DACHSER opens a new logistics center in Lisbon
Representing an investment of 13 million euros, the new facilities of DACHSER Portugal, located in Castanheira do Ribatejo (Vila Franca de Xira), in the Greater Lisbon area, will expand the logistics provider’s response capacity for the customers in the region.
The new logistics center of DACHSER in Lisbon is now up and running. The branch, located in Castanheira do Ribatejo (Vila Franca de Xira), represents an investment of 13 million euros and will allow the international logistics company to expand its response capacity to customers' needs in the region of Lisbon and its surroundings, as well as in the national and European markets. The 150 employees who worked at the former premises of DACHSER in Alverca do Ribatejo platform have already moved to the new site, which started to be constructed in 2021 following the same standards of the company's most modern centers in Europe.
The new platform is located in a strategic area, allowing for a more direct connection to DACHSER's extensive European overland transport network. “In terms of operations, from our branch in Lisbon, we ensure direct, daily routes to France (DACHSER Eurohub in Clermont-Ferrand) and Germany (DACHSER Eurohub in Überherrn), as well as to all the provinces in Spain”, explains Ricardo Carvalho, Branch Manager of the Lisbon branch, who also highlights the weekly departures to virtually anywhere in Europe, through the DACHSER European Logistics network.
Built on a total area of 59,200 square meters the new site allows for faster and more efficient transport services for industrial and consumer goods. With a dedicated area of 7,396 square meters for transport services and 65 loading bays – which may be expanded in the future by 3,796 square meters and an additional 40 loading bays – the logistics center is designed using an efficient model, automated in many ways. For handling and moving goods in the warehouse, the new infrastructure is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies for cross-docking operations, through a sorter system that allows the separation of orders, as well as an automatic pallets’ transportation chain system, among others.
The facility was also built with vehicle management optimization in mind: the access for trucks, for loading and unloading, is fully automated and works based on license plate recognition. There is a parking area for more than 110 vehicles, as well as a waiting area with capacity for 15 trucks, which allow for an orderly stand-by once the vehicles enter the facilities to carry out their daily operations. Additionally, the branch has a two-story office building with a total of 1,411 square meters.
Energy efficiency is the key to sustainability
The attention to sustainability was not forgotten either. The logistics platform is covered with solar panels, has an aerothermal installation for hot water supply, low consumption lighting and air conditioning systems, and intelligent control to achieve greater energy efficiency.
"The strategic location of this new branch offers customers in the Greater Lisbon region optimized transit times to the main European markets, while maintaining the high quality of service."
"With our new logistics center in Lisbon, which follows the construction and organization standards of the most modern DACHSER locations in Europe, we will be able to provide even faster, more efficient and tailored responses to our customers' needs in the national and European markets," comments Celestino Silva, Managing Director European Logistics Iberia at DACHSER. "The strategic location of this new branch offers customers in the Greater Lisbon region optimized transit times to the main European markets, while maintaining the high quality of service," he concludes.
DACHSER wants to continue expanding operations in Portugal
The new logistics center in Lisbon is the second one built from scratch by DACHSER in Portugal - the first was Condeixa-a-Nova in Coimbra. With six branches in Portugal today, five of which are dedicated to land transport (Porto (two branches), Coimbra, Lisbon and Faro), and one dedicated to air and sea transport (Porto), DACHSER aims to expand its operations in the country. According to the investment plan that the multinational has for Portugal, it is planned, in the medium term, to open a new center in Faro, with modernized infrastructure and larger than the existing facilities, in order to increase the capacity to serve the logistics operator's customers in this region.
