First hydrogen truck in practical use at Dachser

During the day, the Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell is used for local transport in Magdeburg; at night, it drives to the Dachser branch in Berlin-Schönefeld.

With the Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell, DACHSER has its first hydrogen fuel cell truck in operation.

While the vehicle will be used for regional distribution transport in the Magdeburg area during the day, at night the truck will be used for system transport to Dachser's branch office in Berlin-Schönefeld. During nighttime operations, the zero-emission vehicle will be powered by a tandem swap body trailer. The Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell has a gross vehicle weight of 27 tons. It can be refueled with 31 kilograms of hydrogen, which enables a range of up to 400 kilometers. For this purpose, Dachser uses the public hydrogen filling station on the A2, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Magdeburg branch. Dachser uses the Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell in a pay-per-use model via H2 Green Power & Logistics GmbH.

Important experiences from everyday use

"We are very pleased to be the first branch office in the Dachser network to use a hydrogen fuel cell truck and thus also to gain important experience for the entire company in local transport and also in long-distance transport," says Christian Schäckel, General Manager, Dachser Logistics Centre Magdeburg. The truck is driven by a female and a male professional driver who recently completed their training at Dachser in Magdeburg.

Alexander Tonn, Chief Operating Officer (COO) Road Logistics at Dachser, adds, "As part of our climate protection strategy, we are intensively involved with alternative drives and fuels and want to actively support their development. We see great potential in hydrogen fuel cell technology. Being able to put it through its paces in day-to-day logistics is an important step for us."

Dachser is pursuing a long-term climate protection strategy and, with a focus on efficiency, innovation, and integrative responsibility, is driving the change toward more sustainable logistics together with customers and partners. The company has already been using battery-electric vehicles since 2018, among other things as part of the sustainable city delivery concept "DACHSER Emission-Free Delivery." The vehicle fleet with alternative drives is being steadily expanded, especially in long-distance transport.
