New Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and New Zealand
After several years of negotiations, the European Union has concluded a free trade agreement with New Zealand (source: Official Journal of the EU L/2024/866 of 25.03.2024), which came into force on May 01, 2024.
The aim of the agreement is to gradually reduce bilateral import duties and thus strengthen economic ties and trade growth between the two regions.
In future, most goods originating in the EU can therefore be imported into New Zealand duty- free, and in return many New Zealand originating goods are to be delivered to the EU duty-free as well. There are exceptions in the agricultural sector, where customs duties will be reduced in various stages.
A proof of preference is required to take advantage of the preferential tariff conditions. Such proof can be a declaration of origin made on an invoice or on another document associated with the goods; the wording can be found in Annex 3 C of the agreement.
