Severe service disruption at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG)

Air freight service at Shanghai PVG Airport is again brought into challenges after several positive COVID cases were reported last Friday, August 20, at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG).

Due to this incident, a large number of workers related to the COVID cases have been sent to test and/or to quarantine. With the massive drop of manpower to as low as 25% of normal capacity, cargo handling process PVG is severely disrupted. Most of the airlines had to cancel flights last Friday but resumed flights 24-48 hours afterward.

Below we would like to provide you with a summary of the current status:

  • Shanghai PVG Airport has been and remains open, however, the operation is critically impacted by the drastic reduction of manpower.
  • The limited workforce brought substantial impacts to the ground handling procedures including loading/unloading and pallet build-up for all airlines who are using Shanghai Pudong International Airport Cargo Terminal (PACTL) in Shanghai PVG Airport.
  • Over the weekend, a considerable number of flights were either delayed or canceled, only approximately half of the scheduled aircraft could take off. As a consequence, there is a huge backlog accumulated.
  • As of today, the situation remains similar. Recovery is in progress but slowly.
  • In response to the situation, carriers adjust flight schedules, cancel flights, divert the flight to alternative airports and stop accepting time-sensitive shipments.
  • Due to restricted capacity and schedule disruptions, delays on both Eastbound and Westbound traffic as well as increasing backlogs are expected.
  • At DACHSER, our air freight teams have been searching for allocations at surrounding airports out of PVG to minimize disruptions to your supply chain. Currently, we have already secured allocations from Hangzhou (HGH), Zhengzhou (CGO) and Beijing (BJS) to alleviate the backlog.

If you have any questions regarding your supply chain, please contact your local contact at the respective DACHSER branch.
