Brexit Update: On Phase 3 of the UK Border Operating Model

Last year, the British government presented how the import of goods should proceed after the end of the transitional phase of the Brexit. With the so-called "Border Operating Model" guide, a three-stage plan for the introduction of customs controls was concretized.

Mixed doubles

Introducing new sporting trends like padel to the European playing field calls for effective teamwork—and the logistics are no exception.

On a green court about half the size of a tennis court, the ball is played back and forth in a rally. One smash of the ball and it goes out? Not in this sport. It bounces against a glass wall that’s about four meters high and drops back onto the court. Play goes on.

This sport, known as padel, can be best described a mixture of tennis and squash. The game is always played in doubles on a grass or artificial turf court that measures 20 meters long and 10 meters wide. Like in tennis, there is a net over which the players hit the ball back and forth. The difference is, the players must not hit the ball over the high walls surrounding the court—a bit like squash. Balls similar to tennis balls are used, but with a little less pressure to prevent them from bouncing too high on the rebound. The ball hits the solid face of the racket, which is covered with small holes. Made of fiberglass, the rackets are not dissimilar to paddles, which is what gives the sport its name.

Brexit deal agreed - customs administration from 01.01.2021

On 24.12.2020, an agreement on future cooperation and trade was reached between the EU and the UK.

An essential point is that between EU and UK for goods deliveries from both areas no customs duties are to be levied. However, this does not mean that the administrative "customs clearance" will be eliminated. This means that all documents and customs relevant information must be submitted by the customer in advance and only after the shipment has been released by the customs team of DACHSER, the shipment can be accepted for dispatch.

Please note that from 01.01.2021 this applies to all shipments between the EU and UK, only shipments from the EU to Northern Ireland are excluded. In particular, proof of preferential origin of goods should be provided. The most important necessary information for exporters and importers can be found in the document below.

To mark the occasion: update of our Brexit checklist

The EU withdrawal of the United Kingdom was completed on 31.01.2020. Currently we are in a transition phase which ends on 31.12.2020. A further extension of this transitional phase should have been agreed until 01.07.2020 and is therefore no longer possible. Thus, the United Kingdom will no longer be part of the internal market and the customs union as of 01.01.2021. If no agreement is reached between the UK and the EU in the remaining time of the transition phase, trade would in future fall under the rules of the World Trade Organization.

We at DACHSER cannot influence the political situation in the UK, but we can prepare you in the best possible way for regulated customs procedures. We have therefore adapted and updated our Brexit checklist to the current circumstances. You can download it here free of charge.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with your responsible contact person at the respective DACHSER branch.

End of the Brexit transition phase: What next?

The deadline for an extension of the Brexit negotiations and thus a longer transitional phase has expired. This has increased the pressure to reach an agreement on future relations between Britain and the EU by the end of the year.

We would like to point out to our customers once again that the arrangements for customs powers of attorney on the part of our customers are particularly important for DACHSER's customs clearance.

Please get in touch with your local DACHSER contact if you have any questions about this. Our experts can help you in any case.

Brexit update: the importance of a customs power of attorney

Although COVID-19 is influencing the Brexit negotiations, as of today negotiations between the EU and the UK are again being conducted via video conference. Three rounds of negotiations, each lasting one week in April, May and June, are planned to advance the details of a trade agreement. So far, the end of the transition phase for the Brexit is December 31, 2020, and DACHSER continues to prepare for this date.

A number of important points need to be taken into account when preparing for the Brexit, for example a customs power of attorney from the relevant recipients is essential for handling shipments to and from the UK. We therefore ask our customers to continue to advise their consignees to provide us with the necessary customs power of attorney.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with your contact at the relevant DACHSER branch.

Brexit: After the exit is before the exit

The UK has now officially left the European Union and Brexit has become a reality. But this is really just the beginning. A transition period until the end of the year is currently preventing any major impact on business and logistics on either side of the Channel. But what happens after that is still an open question.

Brexit: From January 31, 2020 with a transition period

Britain will leave the European Union on January 31, 2020. According to the current circumstances, nothing will change in goods traffic between the countries of the European Union and Great Britain until the end of this year.

After that, a free trade agreement between the EU countries and Great Britain should come into force. However, it is still unclear whether such a free trade agreement can be negotiated and approved by the end of the year.

The Brexit checklist (see below) therefore still provides an overview of the necessary preparatory measures. If you have any questions, please contact your responsible contact person at the respective DACHSER branch.

The UK election 2019 - Update

The UK general election on December 12, 2019 gave a clear result in favor of the Torries. As a result, it can now be assumed that the UK will leave the European Union on January 31, 2020 on the basis of the withdrawal agreement that was negotiated on October 17, 2019.

This withdrawal agreement includes a transition period until December 31, 2020. During this period, a comprehensive trade agreement between the UK and the European Union is to be agreed. Until the expiry of this period, no material effects of the withdrawal are to be felt. Thus, according to the current status, only marginal restrictions regarding deliveries to and from the UK can be expected during the transition period.

In case of any questions, please contact your contact person of DACHSER.

Delay of Brexit - What is still to be considered?

As is known, early general elections for the House of Commons are scheduled for December 12, 2019 in the UK. The EU has also agreed to extend the Brexit deadline to 31 January 2020. The danger of a no deal Brexit is thus averted for the time being. If an agreement on the negotiated contract is reached before 31.01.2020, the agreed transitional period will initially remain in force until 31.12.2020.

Regardless of whether it is a "soft" or a "hard" Brexit, a customs authority of the respective recipient is essential for the processing of shipments to and from the UK. Therefore, we ask our customers to continue to advise their recipients to provide us with the necessary customs authority.

We will keep you up informed about further developments.
